Worship* Services

Weekly services present an opportunity for spiritual contemplation, lively discussion and group fellowship. Services are held during the academic year on Thursdays at 6:00 pm at St. Francis House (1001 University Ave, between Mills and Brooks). Parking is available behind the building (driveway is on Mills St).

*We use the term 'worship' according to its literal meaning, which is 'to ascribe worth to.'

"Exploring the Dark Side of Religion"

As Unitarian Universalists, we feel free to embrace some parts of religions and reject others.  Are we losing out by embracing the celebrations and rejecting some of the "darker" spiritual practices of other religions?  Would these practices or rituals enhance our spirituality, or diminish it?  Join us for this thought-provoking discussion led by young adult Beth Schewe.

Beth is a member of First Unitarian Society and a graduate student in the English Department of UW Madison working on her dissertation on transgender literature.

All are welcome -- please join us!

The Power of Story, with Rev. Kelly J. Crocker
People have been telling one another stories since the beginning of time.  These tales are the narrative of our lives, spanning centuries and connecting generations.  They are the vehicles for our history and our traditions, our values and our lessons for living, our hopes and our dreams.  We will look at the power of story through stories we tell to children.  Kelly will bring some of her favorite children's books.  Do you have a favorite here with you in Madison?  If so, bring it.  If not, bring the memory of it to share with us.  There are those who believe that turning to the ancient art of storytelling can bring about positive change in our world, even peace.  Let's join together to look at some of our favorites.

What do you want to be when you follow your bliss?

This week we'll take some time to think and talk about "following your bliss."  In the words of Joseph Campbell,

We are having experiences all the time, which may on occasion render some sense of this, a little intuition of where your bliss is.  Grab it.  No one can tell you what it is going to be.  You have to learn to recognize your own depth.  All the time.  It is miraculous . . . if you do follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living.

April 10

Our own BethAnne Freund, just returned from the UU-UNO (Unitarian Universalist  - United Nations Office) Intergenerational Spring Seminar in New York, will talk with us about her experiences there. The title of the seminar was, "Picking Up the Pieces: Building a Culture of Peace." Don't miss this important and fun conversation!

April 17

Rev. Michael Schuler (Parish Minister, First Unitarian Society) will lead an informal conversation on living a simpler, less complicated life.  Don't miss this opportunity to address this less than simple topic!

Join us Thursday, April 17, at 6pm at St. Francis House (1001 University Ave, between Mills and Brooks, parking in the back)!

April 24

We're going out for ice cream!  Meet at St. Francis House at 6pm and we'll walk over to the UW Union for ice cream.  If you're looking for us later, look on the Terrace if it's sunny and in the Lakeside Grill if it's rainy.
